The Masters of Ceremonies were Big G & Mathews of Kix 93.5, and the banquet included entertainment by local bluegrass trio The Abrams Brothers. Members of the games organizing committee thanked all of the ParaSport athletes, coaches, officials, support staff, volunteers and spectators for a memorable weekend of competition. Approximately 450 participants from across Ontario travelled to Kingston to participate, including 300 athletes with a physical disability such as spinal injury, spina bifida, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, amputation, and blindness or visual impairment. The six competitive sports include ParaAlpine Skiing, Sledge Hockey, Wheelchair Curling, Wheelchair Basketball, Wheelchair Rugby and Swimming. The venues utilized for the Ontario ParaSport Winter Games include the Calabogie Peaks Resort, the Invista Centre, the Royal Kingston Curling Club, and the Kingston Military Community Sports Centre. The ParaAlpine Skiing events at the Calabogie Peaks Resort today highlighted the Giant Slalom. Female winners were Frederique Turgeon (junior division) with a time of 132.27 and Jan Hymers with a time of 155.51. Male winners were Michael Whitney (junior) with a time of 105.30 and Andy Van Grusven with a time of 93.58.

Bradford (skip Ken Gregory) continued its domination and remains undefeated, winning 8-7 against Fort William and 10-4 against Ottawa. Fort William (skip Carl Levesque) won 8-4 against Toronto and 8-7 against the other Fort William team. Kenora (skip Wayne Ficek) beat Ottawa 7-5, while Toronto (skip Chris Rees) beat Kenora 8-7.

The Flyers beat the Spinners (45-23) and the Rebels (37-22); the Rebels beat the Cruisers (37-26) and the Spinners (28-26); the Spinners beat the Cruisers (44-30); and the Cruisers beat the Flyers (34-31). Also at the Kingston Military Community Sports Centre, there were six games of WheelChair Rugby. Ottawa A had three victories, with 41-21 over Ottawa B, 39-20 over Toronto, and 40-18 over London. Ottawa B scored two victories, with 42-28 over London and 42-28 over Toronto. And London beat Toronto with a score of 38-36. In the women’s events, winners were Christine Cloutier (50M, 100M and 200M freestyle, 50M breaststroke), Megan Sherwin (50M backstroke), Vicky Zasada (100M breaststroke), Paige Keleher (50M and 100M butterfly), Martha Sandoval (100M backstroke), Chou Avanessian (400M freestyle), and Kara Dier (200M individual medley). When they are all swimming in the water, it is impossible to distinguish which swimmers are disabled, and which are not. We have a long history of hosting successful world-class sporting events and are honoured that the 2010 Ontario ParaSport Winter Games will become part of that history. We are looking forward to providing an outstanding, exciting and memorable event for over 250 of Ontario’s top ParaAthletes, their families, coaches, support staff, officials and volunteers! We are excited about the athletes competing in our brand new, or recently built, state-of-the-art sports venues including the Invista Centre, the Royal Kingston Curling Club and the Kingston Military Community Sports Centre. The City of Kingston is rich in history, founded in 1673, Kingston was Canada's first capital, home of the first parliament and Sir John A Macdonald, the first Prime Minister of Canada and the father of Confederation grew up, lived, worked and is buried in Kingston. Kingston, ON -- The City of Kingston, in partnership with the Sport Tourism Branch of the Kingston Economic Development Corporation (KEDCO) and Canadian Forces Base Kingston, has been selected to host the 2010 Ontario ParaSport Winter Games (2010 OPWG). The Kingston Military Sports Centre, the Invista Centre, the Royal Kingston Curling Club, the Little Cataraqui Creek Conservation Area and the Batawa Ski Hill will host events during the forth weekend in January. “It is extremely exciting to host the 2010 Ontario ParaSport Winter Games in Kingston, particularly in a Winter Olympics and Winter Paralympics year!”, said John Munro, Chairman of the Kingston 2010 Ontario ParaSport Winter Games Bid/Host Organizing Committee. “This will be a fabulous opportunity to showcase the amazing abilities of athletes in all of these disciplines. It will be fun bringing the entire city together to cheer these athletes on and ensure they have the best Games ever!” This will be the first time the Limestone City has hosted the Ontario ParaSport Winter Games, scheduled to take place from January 22nd to 24th, 2010.
